vqServer FAQs
If you would like to report a bug, please
email vqSoft or use the
support form.
-
The special security features (custom login pages, etc) don't work. This
may be due to a small difference between version 1.9.53 and earlier versions
or a problem in the default configuration supplied with version 1.9.53. See
the next item for a solution.
-
shtml pages (<servlet>...</servlet> tags) including example.shtml
don't work. This may be due to a small difference between version 1.9.53
and earlier versions or a problem in the default configuration supplied with
version 1.9.53. To rectify this, download
update.cfg to the vq/server/cfg/
subdirectory of your vqServer installation (don't delete the existing
server.cfg!) and restart vqServer.
-
Can I use Java Server Pages (JSP) with vqServer? Yes. There
is a free third-party JSP implementation, GNUJSP, that works well with
vqServer. A dedicated vqServer user, Leslie Tsang, has produced
a customised version of GNUJSP for
vqServer. You might also want to look at the
GNUJSP home page and the
online instructions for using GNUJSP.
-
How do I use my domain name with vqServer? See the
accessing my site page of
the vqServer docs.
-
Does Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) work with vqServer?
Yes, but your code needs to reference the correct JDBC driver. More
information is available online and in
the documentation that comes with vqServer.
-
I've read about a vqServer bug which sounds like a serious security
problem. The report you read is probably misleading. Read about this
problem online.
-
What is the password for the administration server or control centre?
The default user ID and password are both admin without capital letters.
You should of course change this immediately after installing
vqServer; see changing
the administrator password.
-
When I try to start vqServer.exe I get a Windows error
message like The program can't open because it can't find the Microsoft
virtual machine and/or Class not registered. This means that the
Microsoft Java Virtual Machine is not installed on your computer or is not
correctly installed (vqServer.exe requires the Microsoft Java Virtual
Machine). See the Windows page of the
vqServer docs.
-
How do I find out about new versions? If you
registered vqServer, vqSoft will
inform you by email when the next full version is released. An
update is also available which contains the
latest bug fixes and new features but the update may not be fully documented
and may not be fully tested.
-
Where do I get the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) from? You may already
have one installed if you're using Microsoft Windows with Internet Explorer
4 or Mac OS 8. See the requirements
page of the documentation for a list of suppliers. It's free.
-
The vqServer window opens but I can't access my web site or use
the administration server from a browser. The most likely explanation
for this is that you did not run vqServer.exe from your
website/ directory or you did not change to your website/ directory
before starting vqServer from the command line, so vqServer
could not find its configuration file (your website/ directory is
the directory you originally extracted vqserver.zip to). It could
also be due to a corrupt configuration file.
-
shtml pages (<servlet>...</servlet> tags) including example.shtml
don't work. This was due to a bug in vqServer version 1.9.9.
You need to update your vqServer installation
to version 1.9.10 or above and download an updated
example.shtml to replace the existing
file in the public/ subdirectory of your website/ directory
(your website/ directory is the directory you originally extracted
vqserver.zip to).
-
Setting filter servlets for an alias doesn't work. This bug affected
some issues of vqServer verison 1.9. It is fixed in version 1.9.11
and above. See the download page to
update your vqServer installation.
-
Microsoft Windows NT: can I run vqServer as a service? Yes,
with a little help from WinWinSoft's
RunExeSvc.
-
Sun's Java Platform 2 (JDK/JRE version 1.2):
vqServer version 1.9 works with this. However, you will have to use
the java tool instead of the jre tool to start vqServer.
vqSoft recommends that you stick with JDK/JRE version 1.1.8 for the
time being:
-
-
JDK/JRE version 1.2 seems slower than version 1.1.8.
-
There may be a bug in JRE/JDK version 1.2 which makes vqServer unable
to run some CGI scripts on Windows 95/98.
-
There may be a bug in JRE/JDK version 1.2 which generates spurious exceptions
when lines are written to the vqServer window.
-
Problems with CGI scripts: vqServer cannot
run (some 16-bit) CGI scripts if you're using the current release of Sun's
JDK/JRE version 1.2 and Windows 95/98. This seems to be because of a bug
in JDK/JRE version 1.2. Use Sun's JDK/JRE version 1.1.8 or Microsoft's JVM
instead.
-
Bad command or file name when starting vqServer: This happens
if you haven't installed the Java Runtime Environment or if you haven't
set up your PATH environment variable. Read the
requirements and
installation pages of the
documentation and the installation instructions that come with the Java
Runtime Environment. If you're using Sun's JDK/JRE 1.2 instead of JDK/JRE
1.1 you will need to use the java tool instead of the jre tool
to start vqServer. If you're using Microsoft's JVM you will need
to use jview instead of jre to start vqServer.
-
I can't log in to the administration server on the second or subsequent
occasion that vqServer is launched. It is most likely to be due to
a corrupt configuration file.
-
Errors reading the configuration file: These are reported on the console
during the startup sequence. Again, this can be due to a
corrupt configuration file.
-
Corrupt configuration file: This usually happens
because vqServer is incorrectly shut down. See the
shutdown page of the documentation
for instructions. vqServer version 1.9 contains additional code which
makes this this less likely to occur. Solution: re-install the file
server.cfg by unzipping it from the distribution archive to the
vq/server/cfg/ subdirectory of your website/ directory.
